Responsible Gaming

Updated 20 September 2026

Online gambling can feel like a quick way to have fun or win back money you've lost. It carries costs and risks, and it is not a reliable way to recover losses. Gambling is entertainment—one where the odds favour the operator, not you. This page is written for adults who want to understand the real risks and know where to find support if gambling becomes difficult.

ACMA's December 2024 action included Lucky Ones. The support options below do not change the Australian regulatory position.

Gambling Is Not Income

Casino games are designed so the house wins over time. That is the business model. Individual wins happen, but they are short-term luck, not a reliable pattern. Chasing losses—playing longer to recover money you've spent—is how gambling problems often begin. If you have lost money you needed for rent, food or bills, or if you borrowed to gamble, talk to someone right away.

Warning Signs to Notice

Gambling may be becoming a problem if you:

  • Play for longer or with more money than you planned
  • Feel anxious or irritable when you try to stop
  • Hide gambling from family, friends or your partner
  • Borrow money or use credit to gamble
  • Miss work, study or social time because of gambling
  • Lie about how much time or money you have spent

You do not need to experience all of these to reach out. One or two are enough reason to get help.

Set Limits Before You Play

If you choose to gamble online:

  • Decide in advance how much money you can afford to lose—and stick to it
  • Set a time limit and use a timer if it helps
  • Never gamble with money needed for essentials
  • Avoid gambling when you are upset, stressed or tired
  • Keep gambling separate from other activities; do not use it as a coping mechanism

Taking a Break

You do not need permission to stop gambling. Taking a break—a day, a week or longer—is always your choice. If stepping away feels hard, that is a sign to seek support.

Where to Find Help

Gambling Help Online is a free, confidential service run across Australia. Counsellors are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Phone 1800 858 858 or visit Gambling Help Online to chat online or find local services. The service describes its support as confidential; its own website explains contact and privacy arrangements.

If you use only Australian-licensed wagering providers (online or by phone), BetStop lets you set a national self-exclusion. BetStop does not block offshore casinos like Lucky Ones.
